Identifying the South
Africa KGVI Pictorial Issues SUID-AFRIKA with the Hyphen Updated - February 2013 |
The South Africa KGVI pictorial issues were printed with a hyphen between SUID-AFRIKA. Although some stamps during this time period were printed without a hyphen, for the purposes of this article, we have put them into the category of belonging with the previous issue. We have a web page illustrating that issue. You will find those stamps on that page. This article is intended to show a collector how to sort these stamps using one of the three major catalogues. Please note that there are numerous color shades of the stamps shown. We are not planning to illustrate every listed catalogue shade, but rather to identify how to sort the stamps into the primary catalogue numbers. Please order a Commonwealth Catalogue from Murray Payne if you want to see more details on color shades, or flaws from these issues. The catalog numbers are from the 2008 Commonwealth Catalogue (CW), the 2011 Stanley Gibbons Stamp Catalogue (SG) and the 2011 Scott catalog (ST). The descriptions are from the Commonwealth Catalogue, unless they do not list the stamp. In that case the Gibbons description was used. The images were saved in a larger size and at a higher resolution so you can more easily see the details used in sorting them. Please be patient if it takes a few minutes for this page to load. Assistance in creating this web page was provided by Murray Payne, and by Barry Moerke. Without their guidance, the identifications could not have been made. |
CW 3 - SG 54 - ST 45 - 1/2d Grey & Green Both the Frame and Center are unscreened. Design is 18.5MM x 22.5MM |
CW 4 - SG 75C- ST 46 - 1/2d Grey & Green Both the Frame and Center are unscreened. Design is 18.5MM x 22.5MM |
Notice the number of lines in the background behind the Springbok's
head. CW 3 has about 40 lines while CW 4 has about 28. You should also notice the shading lines in the top frame are vertical on CW 3 and horizontal on CW 4. You will find numerous shades of CW 4 that range from green to blue-green. These are listed in the CW catalogue if you want to collect them. |
CW 14 - SG 114- ST 46 - 1/2d Grey & Green Frame is screened, and the Center is unscreened. Design is 18MM x 22MM |
CW 25 - SG 114C- ST 47- 1/2d Sepia-Grey & Green Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 18MM x 22MM |
Sorting between CW 4, CW 14, and CW 25 involves determining
if the stamp was printed using screening or not. See below for an enlargement of CW 4 and CW 14. You will see this better by viewing your stamps with a good magnifying glass. Notice the frame on CW 4 has better definition to the lines in the frame. This is unscreened. The screened printing of the CW 14 frame tends to look like a more irregular series of dots when enlarged. This is screening. |
CW 4 enlarged to show unscreened printing. Notice better line definition under magnification on unscreened printings. |
CW 14 enlarged to show screened frame. Notice a wavy line definition under magnification on screened printings. |
CW 5 - SG 56 - ST 48 - 1d Grey & Red Both the Frame and Center are unscreened. Design is 18.5MM x 22.5MM |
CW 5 - SG 56i - ST 48 - 1d Grey & Bright Rose-Carmine Both the Frame and Center are unscreened. Design is 18.5MM x 22.5MM |
To sort the 1d values, start by measuring the designs. You
should see either 18.5 x 22.5MM, 18 x 22MM, or 17.5 x 21.5MM. If you are having trouble determining the difference between screened or unscreened printings, the smaller printings are screened. |
CW 26 - SG 115 - ST 49 - 1d Grey & Magenta-Rose Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 18MM x 22MM |
CW 27 - SG 135 - ST 50 - 1d Grey-Black & Carmine Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 17.5MM x 21.5MM |
CW 38 - SG 105 - ST 98 1/2d Blue-Green Coil Printing |
CW 38a - SG 105 - ST 98 1/2d Green Coil Printing |
CW 26 - SG 106 - ST 99 1d Carmine-Magenta Coil Issue |
CW 26 - SG 106 - ST 99 1d Carmine-Red Coil Issue |
The coil issues are sorted strictly by color. They were printed in one color, so it is pretty easy to separate them from the other issues.
CW 28 - SG 57 - ST 51 - 1-1/2d Bright
Gold & Slate-Green Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 21MM x 27MM |

Grey-Green Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 21MM x 27MM |
Note the color differences and the size variation in sorting
these issues. The smaller issues also come in several shades as well. The bantam issue (CW 40) is collected as a block of 4 with the roulette in the center as shown. |
CW 36 - SG 87 - ST 52 - 1-1/2d Bright Gold & Slate-Green Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 18MM x 22MM |

Slate-Green Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 13.5MM x 21.5MM |

Note the 2d in CW 20 compared to CW 20A. The value tends to
merge with the circle in CW 20 (1st State) and is more clearly defined in
CW 20A (2nd State). There is a later printing of CW 20A in a much brighter color. You will also see several shades of CW 29 and CW 37 as listed in the CW catalogue. |
CW 20B - SG 107B - ST 55 - 2d Slate & Bright Violet The Frame is unscreened and the Center is screened. Design is 21.5MM x 27.5MM |

CW 30 - SG 117 - ST 57C - 3d Dull Blue Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 21.5MM x 27.5MM |
Notice the difference between the scrolls above 3d in CW 21
and CW 30. The scroll is much better defined in CW 21. CW 31 and CW 31B were redrawn. Notice the clouds in the image compared to CW 30. CW 31B can be easily identified by finding the large perf holes. |
CW 31 - SG 117A - ST 57C - 3d Blue Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 21.5MM x 27.5MM |

CW 46 - SG 118 - ST 58 - 4d Brown Both the Frame and Center are screened. Design is 21.5MM x 27.5MM |
Most of the 4d printings were issued with no hyphen. You will find them described in the KGV Album listings.
In addition to the width of SUID-AFRIKA, notice the scrolls.
CW 10 and CW 10C have more open scrolls. CW 10D is more closed. You should also notice the shading differences behind the tree in CW 10 compared to CW 10C. Finally CW 10D is smaller than CW 10 and CW 10C. |

First notice the quality of the printing, then look for the
color differences. CW 47 was redrawn, so you will see some slight differences
in the lettering. However the Yellow-Green coloring should be sufficiently different to allow you to identify it. |
